The Hyuga episode of Kojiki

Kojiki ("Record of Ancient Matters") is the oldest extant chronicle and myths in Japan, editing in A.D.712 by Ōno Yasumaro at the request of Empress Gemmei.

1 The Cleansing
2 In the new world a god, Izanaki, and a goddess, Izanami, were born.
3 They created the islands of Japan and the elements.
4 Burned giving birth to Fire God,Izanami departed to the netherworld.
5 Izanaki missed his dead wife and visited her.
6 Despite his wife's insistence that he look away
7 he saw her covered with maggots and 8 thunder gods.
8 You have shamed me.
9 Izanami pursued him with demons.
10 Izanaki escaped the netherworld and sought to cleanse himself.
11 So he went to Awakihara, Himuka in Tsukushi country.
12 As Izanaki disrobed to bathe 12 gods were born.
13 From the impurities of the netherworld 2 gods were born.
14 3 more were born to cleanse those 2.
15 Then 6 sea gods were also born.
16 When he washed his left eye, Sun Goddess Amaterasu was born.
17 Tsukuyomi was born from the right eye and Susanoo from his nose.
18 Delighted by the birth of 3 August gods.
19 He gave Heaven to Amaterasu to reign.
20 Tsukuyomi was given the night and Susanoo ruled the ocean.
